What is Semax?

Semax is a heptapeptide (Pro-Gly-Pro sequence attached to ACTH 4-7) developed by the Institute of Molecular Genetics in Russia. Unlike its parent hormone ACTH, Semax lacks hormonal activity and instead exhibits pronounced nootropic and neuroprotective effects. It has been approved in Russia and Ukraine for various neurological applications.

What It's Used For

Research applications include cognitive enhancement studies, stroke recovery research, traumatic brain injury investigations, attention and focus studies, and anxiety research. Semax is valued for its ability to enhance BDNF (brain-derived neurotrophic factor) expression.

How It Works (Mechanisms Explained)

Semax significantly increases BDNF and its receptor TrkB in the brain, promoting neuroplasticity and neuron survival. It also modulates serotonergic and dopaminergic systems, enhances NGF (nerve growth factor), and has been shown to affect the expression of genes related to immune and vascular function in the brain. This multi-modal action contributes to both acute cognitive effects and long-term neuroprotection.

Common Research Stacks

Semax is often researched alongside Selank (for combined cognitive and anxiolytic effects), NA-Semax (a more potent acetylated version), or other nootropics. Its complementary mechanisms make it suitable for combination studies.

Common Beginner Mistakes

Expecting immediate dramatic effects (benefits often build over time), improper intranasal administration technique, confusing Semax with NA-Semax or Adamax (different potencies), and not storing properly (peptides degrade with improper handling).

Reconstitution Basics

Semax is commonly administered intranasally. If provided as lyophilized powder, reconstitute with bacteriostatic water and transfer to a nasal spray bottle. For 10mg, adding 2ml gives approximately 100mcg per spray (assuming 10mcg per 0.1ml drop). Refrigerate and use within 28 days. Intranasal delivery provides direct access to the brain.
